State’s Release of Notice of Preparation Document is a crucial step in moving Delta Conveyance project forward
Sacramento – Today, the Newsom Administration announced it has initiated the environmental review process on a single-pipeline Delta Conveyance by issuing it’s Notice of Preparation (NOP). A NOP provides state agencies information about the potential environmental effects, including a description of the project and its location.
The following statement can be attributed to Michael Quigley, Co-Chair of Californians for Water Security:
Our broad coalition of business, labor, environmental, minority and community groups support the Governor’s plan to modernize our state’s main water distribution infrastructure. Today’s release of the Notice of Preparation by the Department of Water Resources is a crucial next step moving this project forward. We’re eager to review and provide comments on the state’s proposed project alternatives to ensure that the project protects water security for the state while providing enough capacity to ensure the project is financially viable. Californians for Water Security stands ready to support this project at the local, state, and federal level.
CWS supports a Delta Conveyance project that would:
- Protect water security for two-thirds of the state. Without action, water supplies through our main distribution infrastructure will continue to decrease.
- Improve the reliability and security of our water system by fixing aging infrastructure using the most innovative technologies and engineering practices.
- Protect water supplies from earthquakes, floods and natural disasters by delivering them through a modern water pipeline, rather than solely through today’s deteriorating levee system.
- Prepare for the impacts of climate change by improving our ability to move and store water to account for extreme swings in drought and flood and to protect against salinity caused by sea-level rise.
- Restore habitats and more natural water flows above ground in rivers and streams in order to reduce impacts on endangered fish and other wildlife.
- Serve as a critical component of a comprehensive water portfolio.
